TH78A.3

These are modifications  for the Kenwood  TH-78a  hand held dual  band radio.
They were recieved from Kenwood and through the grapevine.
 
CROSSBAND REPEAT:
The user manual  claims the unit will cross band  repeat out of the box, this 
is not  true.   For the  TH-78a  to cross  band repeat  you must remove diode
D4.  Unfortunately you need  to reset  the CPU  which will clear  your preset
memories.   Write down  what you  have programmed  into  the TH-78a  and then
hold down  the "M" key and power up the unit.   All LCD segments should light
up.  The CPU is  now reset and to  use crossband  repeat hold the "F" key for
longer than 1 second, then press the "0" key.   The decimals in the displayed
frequencies will flash indicating crossband repeat.
 
EXPANDED FREQUENCY COVERAGE:
The TH-78a will  recieve far  beyond it's  factory  settings.   It will  also 
transmit outside it's normal range to some extent (of course thats not legal,
now is it?).  By removing diode D5 the frequecy tuning will be expanded.  New
ranges include:
    121-170 Mhz transmit and receive
    400-500 Mhz transmit and receive
 
    300 Mhz receive and 800 Mhz receive only
      To get 300 & 800 Mhz coverage place the TH-78a in VFO mode.  Press the
      "F" key for longer than one second, then press the "BAND" button.
 
 
To open the radio  remove the battery,  then remove the 3 #0 phillips screws 
from the back, and the one from the side.   Flip over the radio and press up 
on the inside of the back cover.   Be carefull with the LEDs on top.  On the
front portion of the  radio you'll  find a  circuit  board with a  copper or 
brass shield.   Depending on the version of  the radio the shield may have a 
1/2 oval cutout  on the lower right  side.  The memory  expansion unit  fits 
just to the right of the diodes which are  under the oval cutout.   If there 
is no cutout then you must CAREFULLY remove the shield.
